This strain is sold under its widely used trade name Ganoderma lucidum. DNA studies have shown that much of the reishi cultivated today belongs to the closely related species Ganoderma lingzhi, and both names are widely used for red reishi.

Antler vs. Classic Form:

Reishi can develop into two very different-looking fruiting bodies from the exact same genetics: the classic broad, glossy, cap-like conk form, or the branching, cap-less antler form. Which one you get is determined by cultivation conditions during fruiting, not by the culture itself. Restricting fresh-air exchange and allowing CO₂ to build up (roughly above 2,000 ppm) inside the growing container encourages antler growth, while providing regular fresh-air exchange (keeping CO₂ below about 1,000 ppm) encourages the classic conk form. You can even influence the outcome mid-growth by adjusting ventilation partway through.
