Build your own grain spawn with our Sterile Grain Spawn Kit — pre-sterilized grain bags with a self-healing injection port, paired with a liquid culture syringe of your chosen species. Simply inject, incubate, and watch it colonize. No cutting the bag open, no exposure risk — just a clean, direct injection into sterile substrate.
Why Buy This Kit:
- Save 10-15% compared to buying the same amount of our pre-colonized Grain Spawn - the bigger bundle, the bigger saving.
- True G1 grain spawn - one generation closer to the master culture than our standard G2 listings, meaning more vigorous growth.
- Strains you won't find as pre-colonized Grain Spawn, including Chicken of the Woods and Paddy Straw.
- Learn by doing - inject, incubate, and watch mycelium take over the grain with your own hands, no expensive sterile lab setup required.
A Note on Generations:
Unlike our standard Grain Spawn, which is prepared as second-generation (G2) spawn, this kit lets you inoculate directly from liquid culture yourself — producing true first-generation (G1) grain spawn. By G1, we mean grain inoculated directly from our master liquid culture, with zero grain-to-grain transfers — the earliest possible generation, one step closer to the original master culture than our standard listings.
What's Included:
- 2 Bags + 10cc LC: 2 sterile grain bags (~1.5 kg each) with self-healing injection port and 0.2-micron filter patch, 1 × 10 mL liquid culture syringe of your chosen species, 1 sterile needle, 2 alcohol wipes
- 4 Bags + 20cc LC: 4 sterile grain bags, 1 × 20 mL liquid culture syringe of your chosen species, 1 sterile needle, 4 alcohol wipes
Freshly Prepared:
Every grain bag is sterilized fresh to order. Please allow approximately 1 week for grain preparation, sterilization, quality inspection, and packaging before shipment.
How It Works:
- Swab the injection port with alcohol.
- Inject 2.5–5 mL of liquid culture per bag through the self-healing port.
- Gently massage the bag to distribute the culture — no need to reopen it.
- Incubate at 21–24°C (70–75°F), out of direct light. Colonization time varies by species and strain — expect roughly 2 to 8 weeks.
- Don't disturb the bag until it's at least 60% colonized — shaking too early is the single most common cause of contamination in DIY grain spawn. Once it's past 60%, you can gently shake or massage the bag to redistribute the mycelium and speed up full colonization.
- Once fully white, it's ready to use — treat it exactly like our standard Grain Spawn.
New to this? A good starting point is any of our oyster mushroom varieties — they colonize faster than most other species, giving you quicker results while you get comfortable with the process.
Important Information:
This kit is intended for customers familiar with sterile injection technique and liquid-culture handling. Cultivation instructions and personalized guidance are not included — this product provides the sterile substrate and culture only; colonization and fruiting are the customer's responsibility.
Storage:
Store the sterile grain bag(s) at room temperature in a clean, dry area until ready to inoculate. Keep the liquid culture syringe refrigerated (2–8°C) and protected from direct light. The culture may be stored for up to 6 months under refrigeration, although we recommend using it as soon as practical for the most vigorous growth. Do not freeze.
A note on cold-sensitive species: most liquid cultures store well under standard refrigeration, but Paddy Straw and Pink Oyster cultures are both damaged by standard refrigeration. Keep both at room temperature (18–30°C / 64–86°F), never in the fridge, and use them relatively promptly for the most vigorous growth.
Quality Guarantee:
Every grain bag is sterilized and inspected before shipment. If your sterile grain bag is confirmed contaminated upon arrival, prior to inoculation, contact us promptly with clear photographs within 24 hours for a replacement at no additional charge. Once inoculated, contamination resulting from handling, injection technique, or storage is outside our control.
